The way we search is really getting transformed with generative AI.

Earlier, we’d just go to Google and search. But personally, I’ve started using ChatGPT a lot for my shopping research.

For example, recently I was exploring buying a new phone. So I just gave a long voice prompt like, Help me find a phone under ₹50,000, Android, with Android 15 or above, and compare it with others.”

It gave me a super useful result — easy to understand, and I actually ended up buying from there!

The only challenge I felt was that the link to buy wasn’t directly connected. Right now, when we think of online shopping, we usually think of Amazon, Flipkart, or quick commerce. But these days, we’re also buying a lot directly from brands — that’s the whole D2C wave that’s become massive.

And globally, the biggest player in D2C is Shopify. It handles over $600 billion in revenue and is growing at 30%+ — soon, it could even cross Amazon’s e-commerce size.

So what does this mean?

With OpenAI and Shopify partnering, it’s a big signal that brands will soon be able to sell directly through platforms like ChatGPT. Amazon is a shopping ecosystem. Big e-commerce players are ecosystems. 

But this will change discovery and clickability — people will be able to search, discover, and buy directly through AI.

All the user needs to do is click the “Buy Now” button, and the payment will be handled securely by Shopify.
